The innovative actions of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) are laboratories of ideas which will benefit more disadvantaged regions. Because the main interventions of the Structural Funds often provide only limited opportunities for experimentation, innovative actions provide regional agents with the necessary "testing ground" to overcome the difficulties raised by the new economy.
The programmes for 2002-2006 include measures relating to one or more of the three following strategic issues: regional economy based on knowledge and technological innovation; e-Europe: the information society at the service of regional development; regional identity and sustainable development.
